Forensic Accounting Explained by Chris Gilmour

You might have heard about Forensic Accounting but are unsure what this practise is. Basically, Forensic Accounting assists with legal matters and is a combination of accounting, auditing, and investigative skills. In legal sense it includes dispute resolution, litigation support and investigation. The Litigation Support area represents the factual presentation of the economic issues that are related to the existing or the pending litigation. In this form, a Forensic Accountant will quantify that damages sustained by the various parties involved in the legal dispute and might also assist in the resolution of the dispute, sometimes before it reaches court. Ultimately, if the dispute reaches court, the Forensic Accountant might also offer testimony as a registered expert witness in the case.

Regarding the investigation, this is the act of evaluating evidence which will determine if criminal matters, for example employee theft, insurance frauds, identity theft or securities fraud, which might also include the falsification of financial statements, has happened. It is important that the Forensic Accountant can provide evidence of any of these as the case will almost certainly hinge on it. Part of the Forensic Accountant's work might also be to advise, suggest, recommend and implement procedures that will minimize or diminish future risk of loss. Forensic Accounting can also be used in divorce matters including other civil cases such as suing, as well as corporate cases.

It is understood that Forensic Accounting will involve much more than just looking at numbers. It is considered more than just accounting and requires astute detective work as many experienced people will try and hide false accounting which leads to its often high demand for corporate and personal financial matters. Perhaps it is a career that you might consider yourself being in one day. If so, it is important that a person has the ability to think carefully, openly, honestly and on their feet. As well as having the ability that is particular to success in any specific field, by being able to develop an ability to think will enhances the person's chance of success in everyday life ultimately increasing the person's experience and merit everyday life.
